Haass Told “Economic Issues Key To Unlocking Social Issues”

The Chairman of the Institute of Directors (Northern Ireland Division) has revealed that he told Dr Richard Haass that, “only through a concerted focus on economic issues as the key to unlocking social problems, can we really hope to solve the politics.”

Addressing IoD members at today’s Annual Lunch in Belfast, Paul Terrington said:

“Dr Haass should not constrain his scope too narrowly and that any discussions around “rights” must include the right of business and business owners to trade uninterrupted, unthreatened and unharmed.

“In that regard, our public debate on respective rights is too narrowly framed.”

In his speech, Paul Terrington said aspiration to be leaders should not be restricted to business leaders and said the IoD had much to offer politicians.

“We are an Institute where members are members in an individual capacity. We are not a lobbying organisation so there is no conflict of interest; and active participation might help build better understanding amongst politicians of business, business issues and business
people.”

He continued:

“Our vision in the IoD is to support, empower, represent and set the highest standards for directors and business leaders; to help them attain their leadership potential and to create and grow profitable businesses that contribute to sustainable economic growth and social and community responsibility.”

The IoD NI Annual Lunch, sponsored by Rainbow Communications in partnership with EE, also celebrated the success of graduates of the IoD Chartered Director Programme who were presented with their awards.

A full house of members and their guests at the Hilton Hotel then heard from author Mike Southon, renowned for his “Beermat Entrepreneur” series.
