The Role of the Company Chairman - one of the IoD’s portfolio of short courses – is relevant for current and aspiring Chairmen in private, public and third sector organisations of any size or sector.
“It was a lively course, delivered at a good pace, peppered with many real and practical examples of what being the chair of a board entails.”
Roy Devine CDir, Chairman CODA Operations Limited
Attending the course will enable you to:
• Appreciate the board’s role, purpose and key tasks
• Define the role and responsibilities of the chairman in successfully leading and
chairing a board
• Compose and develop a more effective board
• Make proper use of both executive and non-executive directors
• Deal more effectively with the media
• Plan and run effective board meetings
• Understand the skills and personal qualities most likely to help to achieve
competence in the role.
• Appreciate the importance of the chairman’s relationship with other board members
“Shortly after participating in the course, I became a NED of a Scottish company listed on the AIM market. In the complicated plc world, I found the course very useful in helping me understand the role of a Non-Executive Director, his relationship with executive Directors, the Chairman and Chief Executive, and operational versus strategic thinking, as well as the potential risks attaching to the role. This understanding of best practice is equally relevant to unlisted companies, family businesses or even public sector boards.”
Declan Billington, Chief Executive John Thompson & Sons Ltd
The course will be presented by Francis Bergin, who has over 30 years' experience as Chairman/Director of many companies, councils, committees and tribunals. He was Chartered Secretary with Unilever plc, Director of The School of Business Administration and a visiting Lecturer at The European Business School, and is a published author on communication and presentation skills. He has a wealth of experience in Corporate Governance having conducted Board Evaluations for several large organisations in the commercial and not- for-profit sectors.
“Francis Bergin is a very effective communicator and is really tuned into the job of Chairman. I have continued to find the course documentation very useful.”
Peter Morrow, Managing Director Morrow Communications
