The essential and unique role of the board in driving the success of the organisation cannot be overestimated.  Ensuring clear vision, and a strategy to drive the business forward, while managing risk and keeping the organisation safe and legal, requires a team of competent, well-informed directors.

A key driver of board effectiveness is the leadership of the chair, to ensure that the board is an effective team, fulfilling its role and being accountable to all of its stakeholders.

The role of chair demands a particular set of skills – setting the tone for the board, ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities, supporting and challenging colleagues appropriately, and giving feedback to support continual improvement. We have found that often, in the boardroom, ‘the soft skills are the hard skills’. Having the right conversations at Board level, particularly when those are difficult conversations, can really make a difference to board effectiveness.

The ‘Leadership for Board Chairs’ programme will provide a supportive forum to enable board chairs to reflect on their role, learn from best practice and ensure they have the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead their boards effectively. The focus will be on the leadership competencies required to achieve excellence in practice as chair of the board. Participants will receive an assessment of their personality type, and the impact of that on their leadership and team input, using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.

This unique accredited programme will lead to an internationally recognised ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership.

Learning Outcomes

    · Have enhanced skills to hold senior management to account for performance

    · Develop a bespoke Governance Action Plan for presentation to their board
