NI Bureau China Bulletin Jun 2016
15 July 2016
China has published its 13th 5 Year Plan. This plan is of particular interest now as it is set against the government’s slowdown of the economy or the ‘new normal’ as it is often referred to. The plan is a national strategy setting out goals for economic and social development with a growth target of 6.5% which will be achieved through a concentration on innovation, entrepreneurship and consumption. The plan also looks at areas such as health sector improvement and education. The plan and its implementation signals opportunities for more economic cooperation, investment, trade and knowledge exchange between Northern Ireland organizations and those in China.
Post the Brexit referendum, China is adopting a wait and see approach, recognising some uncertainty in the immediate aftermath of the decision, and will examine government's plans and approaches in the future. The desire to have a strong relationship with the UK and with NI remains, and programmes to promote this relationship will continue.
