Statement from IoD NI in response to European Parliament’s recent vote
28 November 2013
In response to the European Parliament’s vote in favour of imposing gender quotas for board membership – including a threat of liquidation if a company fails to meet the 40% minimum - Linda Brown, Director of IoD Northern Ireland said:
“Whilst it’s encouraging that politicians in Brussels and Westminster are looking seriously at the lack of women in the boardroom, the introduction of quotas is merely
masking the lack of diversity in the boardroom rather than solving it.
“Women want to be appointed to board positions on merit and as a result of their own professional development, rather than because their organisation has been told to have more women on their boards.
“This was highlighted at our Women’s Leadership Conference in Belfast earlier this year, when 70% of delegates voted against the compulsory imposition of quotas for the percentage of women on boards.”
