Young Directors Forum

The Institute of Directors established the Young Director’s Forum (YDF) as a national initiative that has been taken up by most of the IoD Regions and Divisions. In Northern Ireland, we set up our own YDF steering group in 2008.

With 25% of IoD members in Northern Ireland aged below 43, it’s little wonder that we have such a vibrant and active Young Directors’ Forum (YDF).

The aim of the YDF is to provide our younger directors with a support network that will assist them in growing their businesses and developing their own skills as business leaders.

Within the Forum there is no ‘typical’ young director. The directors come from a diverse range of businesses ranging from start ups to large corporates and cover a full range of industry sectors. The common theme is that they are committed to their own professional development and enjoy making new business contacts through the networking opportunities presented by the YDF.

We are delighted that Willis Insurance and Risk Management are sponsoring the Young Directors Forum for the second consecutive year. Willis Insurance & Risk Management has built a sound reputation as a highly professional independent brokerage and consultancy and has close to 60 staff across offices in Belfast, Coleraine and Reading, England.

Any Young Director who is not an IoD member but is interested in attending an event should contact Lisa Keys.

Steering Group

Encouraging member engagement is an important part of the IoD overall strategy and therefore having members involved in the planning of the YDF is a vital part of its success. Our YDF Steering Group is led by Adrian Allen of The Tomorrow Lab and its members are Neal Lucas, Neal Lucas Recruitment; Jayne Gallagher, Legal Island; Patricia Heron, Regus; Chris Harrison, JPR; Jonathan Carter, Corporate AV and Lisa Keys, IoD.

 Mentoring scheme

A pilot mentoring programme was completed and evaluated at the end of 2010. In the pilot 17 YDF members were paired up with experienced, volunteer mentors from the Northern Ireland membership. Following the success of this programme, the Institute is now offering all IoD young directors the opportunity to request a mentor.

Anyone interested in either mentoring a young director or being mentored should contact Linda Brown.
